Like it or not, our world runs on transportation. Whether it’s goods or people, there are planes, trains, cars, buses, boats, and any number of other vehicles employed to get them there. We rely on the transportation industry to develop and supply the equipment that is used around the world every day.
But with the push to be more environmentally conscious, engineers are having to get creative and think outside the box. What does it mean to be eco-friendly in the transportation industry? Let’s take a look at some of the forward-thinking ideas that have been proposed over the past several years.
- Public Transportation. An increase in available public transportation would make a huge difference in our global environmental impact. Think of all the cars on the roads, each carrying an average of two people per vehicle. If we were to eliminate the bulk of traffic and promote mass transportation, then we’d be taking great strides into the future.
- Electric Vehicles. It seems electric vehicles are the way of the future. By eliminating the fossil fuels needed for traditional motors, we’re making a conscious effort to preserve the environment and the future of our planet.
- Specialized Truck Routes. Semi-trucks are one of the most common ways of shipping goods across large distances, with approximately 13 million trucks in operation across the US. Unfortunately, they have to use the same roads and highways that cars use, and this excess traffic can slow them down considerably. What if there were more streamlined routes available, tailored for cargo truck use only?
- Bike-Friendly Infrastructure. Bicycles are not just for fun and exercise. In fact, they can also be a great mode of transportation. Many people are discouraged from using bikes due to the limited infrastructure in place: bike lanes are few and far between, road intersections can be dangerous, and sidewalks are crowded with pedestrians. If communities were developed with bicycles in mind, we might see fewer cars on the street.
- More Pedestrian Paths. Walking is perhaps the most eco-friendly mode of transportation available. Of course, walking may not always be practical for large areas, but smaller communities could benefit from more paths and greenways that make pedestrians feel at home.
